Mulligan Concept

We are among only 130 certified Mulligan practitioners in the United States and of only a few thousand in the world

This puts you in front of some of the leading clinicians in our profession. We were specifically trained under Brian Mulligan himself, a pioneer in the evolution of the manual physical therapy profession from New Zealand, and the creator of these techniques. Our therapists are practicing at a level far superior to most others practicing in orthopedic physical therapy today. Brian Mulligan calls these latest techniques, “the newest PILL for pain”, because these techniques are:

Combined with therapeutic exercise, patient education, a home exercise program, and modalities to treat the associated pain, your results could be amazing!

These techniques are used to treat all diagnoses and body regions suffering from associated physical pain including:

  • Resolution Of Low Back Or Neck Pain Within Several Visits
  • Restoring Pain-Free Function For Hip And Knee Arthritis Patients
  • Enabling Ankle Sprain Patients Walking Pain-Free Within Days To Weeks
  • Allowing Patients Raise Their Arm Overhead Without Pain
  • Getting Athletes Back In The Game Quickly

Mobilization With Movement Technique

Phase 1

During the assessment phase, the therapist will identify one or more comparable signs. These signs may be: your loss of joint movement, pain associated with movement, or pain associated with a specific functional activity. For example, you may suffer from pain in your low back with bending.

Mobilization With Movement Technique

Phase 2

A passive accessory joint mobilization is applied by the physical therapist. This accessory glide must itself, be pain free. Yes! These are PAIN-FREE TECHNIQUES!

The therapist must continuously monitor the patient’s reaction to ensure no pain is recreated. Utilizing his/her knowledge of joint arthrology, a well-developed sense of tissue tension and clinical reasoning, the therapist investigates various combinations of glides to find the correct treatment plane and grade of movement.

Mobilization With Movement Technique

Phase 3

While sustaining this hands-on technique, the patient is requested to perform the offending movement. This type of treatment works at many levels of the body and specifically, the central nervous system reestablishing normal joint function. The Pain and movement should now be significantly improved (i.e., increased range of motion, and a significantly decreased, or better yet, absence of the original pain).

The previously restricted and/or painful motion or activity is repeated by the patient while the therapist continues to maintain the appropriate technique. Further gains are expected with repetition during a treatment session typically involving multiple sets to reeducate the movement pattern.

Mobilization With Movement Technique

Phase 4

Even further gains are made through the application of patient assisted, passive overpressure at the end of available, pain-free movement. This begins to change the adaptive and pathologic shortening of your involved tissue. This overpressure is again, pain-free and begins to set the stage for carryover. This is the ability of the body to sustain this new movement for the days, weeks, and years to come.

With a specific home exercise program, designed for your condition, you can now participate in the healing process and take responsibility for maintaining your physical health. This helps release you from the imprisoning and disabling feeling of living with pain and disability.
